Since I had gone to the High Tech schools before I had two previous experiences with exhibition night. I had been looking forward to this Exhibition night in particular because it was my first one in high school. Unfortunately, it wasn't as enjoyable as I had imagined it to be. I expected more people to come, but the slow flow of people coming in slowed down my excitement. While working on the Math/Science part of the room on my first shift, my partner and I did a good job engaging our viewers into the conversation. We used our materials as examples instead of just letting them sit there which provided a hands on understanding for everyone. The hardest encounter for me wasn't actually on exhibition night. It was when our peers came in and questioned us. Since they already knew the content they threw upon us the hardest questions. On the Humanities side, I don't think we performed as well as we could have. Although we had music to draw people in, many people seemed confused by our story. It was difficult to describe where we got the inspiration for our story from because it just came to our minds suddenly. It would have been better if we had provided more examples of how our story was going to turn out. Although we had an amazing story that we had written, my partner and I should have shared how enthusiastic we were about our story to the people around us. That way, people would have been more drawn to our work area. Overall, I performed fairly well and I will take this experience and use it to my advantage in my future years at High Tech High.

Developing Stories Through Activities

After writing our character biographies, our class did an activity that increased our knowledge of our characters. By acting out our characters personality, we were able to truly understand how our characters reacted and felt about certain situations. Instead of just writing creatively about our character, we were able to connect with them in a way that can only be done through actions. When watching other people in character, I realized that characters with more depth drew my attention more than the usual ones. This inspired me to analyze my character even more and I realized I needed more complexity for my character to appeal to others. The more variety in a character provides for a larger reading audience that reads with a connection. One of the things I noticed was how our characters were one of the very few who chose to express a story with an object instead of a human. I personally think this will captivate the reader and add a somewhat comical feel to our historically based graphic novel. By developing our characters even more, my belief is that it will benefit our story greatly and make it become incredibly unique.
